Salve, I’m Magistra Catherine Drown and I am passionate about inspiring young scholars to find joy and meaning in learning, especially in learning Latin.
For the past 18 years, I’ve taught Latin to students, ages six to adult, in a variety of settings, ranging from traditional public school, to co-ops, to one-on-one tutoring. Mostly, though, I’ve had the opportunity to have a lot of fun learning Latin with eager young students.
The LivelyLatin curriculum was born out of a desire to systematically and thoroughly teach the Latin language in a lively, interesting and fun way which fosters a love of learning in students. Inherent in this love of learning is a sense of wonder at the historical roots of Latin as well as the experience of interconnectedness of culture, geography, historical events, and the language we use to express our reality. When students realize this interconnection, they experience a satisfying moment of insight and meaning which brings joy, inspiring them to seek more learning. When I see this happening in students, I find joy and meaning.
I’ve homeschooled my own four children though various grades, depending on their mission and direction, and I currently also work with a learning center that supports homeschooling families, so I honor the endeavor of parents taking on the ultimate responsibility for educating their children, through whatever setting is best for the student and the family. We are privileged to live in a time when there are many available paths to growth and learning. May we all pursue those where we find joy and meaning!
Presently, I am also finding joy and meaning in the study of Shakespeare, history, literature, Zumba, yoga, and gardening.
